Our sanctuary is excited to launch an ambitious project in the neighborhood:

Project Christmas 2024!☃️🌲🌟

Our goal is to have sponsors for at least 50 of our residents, and at $10/month, that will go a long way to cover our monthly food cost!

By Christmas 2024 we reached 22 cats sponsored so we'll keep going in the new year🎉!

Gracie

🎄SPONSORED!🎄

Will you please join us in this worthwhile project and consider sponsoring Gracie?

This little girl was pulled from Orange County Animal Shelter at 4 months old (July 2024) and is in need of eye surgery.  She is recently spayed and vaccinated, and is doing well, but with an underdeveloped left eye and with very limited sight in her right eye, she will need corrective surgery in order to avoid further complications as she grows.  Her visual impairment, however, does not slow this little lady down, as she loves to play and wrestle with her kitten friends, and she loves to be carried and to give kisses.

Please consider becoming a monthly donor to support Gracie🐱

 THANK YOU!!

🌈Lucy sadly crossed the

Rainbow Bridge December 26, 2024🌈

This beautiful lady came to us from Homestead, FL, where a good Samaritan had found her abandoned on the streets after her person passed away and the family sold the property where she had lived - this is unfortunately a fairly common story, where families either can't or won't take on the responsibility of a companion animal who is left behind, and too often, instead of making appropriate arrangements, abandon the cat to fend for herself, wrongfully believing that cats can hunt and be "just fine" living on the streets.

As the shelters were full, the Samaritan was advised to have Lucy euthanized, given her advanced age (we believe she was around 18), and underlying medical problems such as kidney and thyroid issues and dental disease.  However, that is not how the Samaritan wanted Lucy's life story to end and eventually she found us, and she drove for hours to bring her to BHS, for which we are so grateful.

Even though Lucy only stayed with us for a few short months - her physical shape was too fragile for her to undergo dental surgery or extensive medical treatment - she was loved here, she had a warm bed, all the food she could eat and the company of Ms. Bee, another old lady who took to Lucy immediately.  While we are very saddened that Lucy didn't stay with us for a bit longer, we are so comforted by the fact that there are good people in this world who will go to such lengths to give an old, abandoned cat the ending she deserves: she passed surrounded by love.

We miss you so much little girl, and Ms. Bee is still looking for you...

Barney

Barney used to live outside as a barn cat when he first came to BHS (we had been told he preferred to be outside), but he didn't like it so now he's living in the Cattery with the other indoor former community cats - he prefers the comforts of the indoors and is not interested in chasing rats

It's a common assumption that colony cats simply like to live outdoors - most do not, most cats prefer the safety and comforts of the indoors and if given a choice that is what they would choose

Frodo

Our beautiful fluff Frodo was dumped with his litter mates at a local feed store, and he was the last one in the litter that was waiting for a new home.  While we can appreciate that people try to find good homes for abandoned kitties, it is our philosophy that adopters should be vetted and kittens shouldn't be going to their new home until they are fixed and vaccinated, to ensure their health and the end of a vicious cycle of unwanted kittens being born daily in our community.  Frodo is now 9 years old and we hope he has long forgotten how he was carelessly abandoned that early morning outside the feed store, and we also hope his litter mates are as lucky as he is to have found a loving forever home.

Merlin

Our big, now 14 year old, handsome boy Merlin came from PAGO when he was 8 months old.  Suffering from giardia - an intestinal parasite wreaking havoc on his small intestines - and with constant diarrhea, his prospects for being adopted were slim.  After several months of medical care, Merlin grew strong, gained weight, and never stopped running from one room to the next.  At BHS he's the big "alpha", the big daddy cat who welcomes everyone, comforts everyone and makes sure all residents get attention.  He doesn't have a bad bone in his body, and while he's getting up in age now, he still likes to run (well, jog) from one room to the next, making sure he doesn't miss a meal or a cat who needs his attention.

Pippin

Pippin was found wandering alone around a pond in Ft. Lauderdale and was rescued by a former student.  He was taken to a vet to get a check up, and at 6 weeks of age, he was deemed healthy. It was middle of summer and the shelters were full, so long story short, Pippin ended up here. That was almost 9 years ago, and we're so happy the little bundle of energy stayed and grew into a big, handsome tuxedo.

Willow and Merry

This bonded pair were initially offered up for adoption through a foster (not affiliated with BHS), who left them in a ferret cage on display at a pet store.  After 3 weeks, there had been no interest in adopting them as a pair, and we stepped in and brought them to BHS where they have grown into 2 lovely young ladies who have made many friends and are thriving.
